Liability and Assets–Probate

by | Nov 22, 2022

When someone passes away, should you be paying the decedent’s medical bills, credit card bills, or any other types of bills? Not right away. If you pay someone else’s debt with your own money, you could open yourself up to liability to pay all of the estate’s debt.

Don’t Open Yourself Up to Liability

Instead, forward the decedent’s mail and keep track of all the bills that come in using an excel spreadsheet naming the creditor, the address, and totals.

Once you have everything organized, you can negotiate and pay creditors out of the Estate account, instead of your own.

Schedule a Probate Advisory meeting with one of our attorneys to learn more about the probate process and how to protect yourself from liability for someone else’s debt!
